The past few weeks have been patched together by adventuring into a slight “abstraction” of the figure, forming potentially the most exciting London based project yet with some colleges in Germany, and writing a contribution to the 7th Berlin Biannale Curator research on the political inclinations of contemporary artists. I will share everything as soon as I can…

Another whirlwind weekend back in London and I have a lot of thanks to give, namely to the Enterprise Centre of the Creative Arts, University of the Arts London and Candid Arts Centre. And of course everyone who came down to the talk at Camberwell College of Arts on the 16th.

As it transpires, I’ve been awarded the Creative Enterprise Freelance Award once more. I’m humbled, grateful and giddy… and really wasn’t expecting it.

My relationship with photography bleeds heavily into my painting by way of source material. Although occasional cross overs are inevitable, there is generally a clear divide in the uses of my camera: source material, and photographs which exist solely and intentionally as photographs. This is a selection of the latter, from 2005 onwards.

Source material is merely a tool for the creation of a new moment – a painting or drawing – which never moves into the past (unless the work is completely destroyed), and becomes derelict and archived prior to use.

In contrast, these photographs purposely remain records of past moments, and hinge on this fact. None of them have been digitally manipulated, staged or pre-arranged. They are openly limited by their means of existence; chance, and the camera. I believe this fact lends itself to photography as it has an unshakable quality of indisputable ‘evidence’ – what you are seeing was really seen.

They are small, reproduced slices of the spontaneous, ever present beauty of the every day; at least as much as we are capable of seeing. And they were an absolute joy to produce, what with shutter clicks being as addictive as garibaldis.

Award, shpiel & oil paint adventures

The site is finally starting to take real shape and soon I will be updating more regularly. Have a look at my shiny new expandable thumbnails in ‘Works’.
And also, of course, the work is taking a new direction. Through limiting my use of colour to about 5 tubes, I’ve developed a different and more thought driven relationship with colour. It’s exciting, I will write more about it later. Here is my latest piece (and my palette in the corner, at least it gives a sense of scale); I will upload clearer images and details over the next few days as I get them done.

Thank you to everybody who came to the lecture at Camberwell art school I spoke at last night. Tonight I’ll be at the Candid arts centre in Isligton as I’ve been nominated for the creative enterprise award once again…

A beautifully shot short film by Marc Holtbecker & Lukas F. Hartmann for einsfestival (as televised alternative to advertising).

Filmed in my studio in Berlin. The source material was provided, so an added challenge – the figure is not particularly representative of my work’s current path but is a comprehensive expose of the process of completing a quick study (just under two hours). More fun than being sold more stuff, for sure. I had just rolled out of an aeroplane. Enjoy.
